Bimco formed Ship Recycling Alliance, India Joins as Founding Member

Before Hong Kong International Convention (HKC) for safe ship recycling being enforced in June 2025, Bimco (Baltic and International Maritime Council) formed Ship Recycling Alliance. it will be chaired by Dr. Nikos Mikelis, an industry veteran. The Alliance aims to assist regulators, promote safe recycling methods, and connect stakeholders.

Founding Members:

  • Includes global cash purchasers like GMS and Wirana.
  • Industry associations from Bangladesh, Turkey, Pakistan, and India.

Key Objectives of the Alliance:

  • Promote safe, environmentally friendly ship recycling standards.
  • Open to stakeholders including ship owners, cash purchasers, financial institutions, and recyclers.

Engagement with International Bodies:

Alliance will work with the IMO, Basel Convention Secretariat (EU), and representatives from member countries.

Goal: Obtain legal clarity on the interaction between the HKC and Basel Convention regulations.

Focus Areas for BIMCO:

Evaluate and respond to any proposed changes to the HKC.
Assist in implementing and enforcing Basel Convention regulations related to ship recycling waste.
