Terminal Puerto Arica S.A. (TPA) has officially ordered two Generation 6 mobile harbor cranes from Konecranes to expand its cargo handling capacity in northern Chile.

Booked in the first quarter of 2026, the new heavy equipment is expected to enter active service by January 2027.

This investment directly strengthens the Port of Arica’s position as a critical maritime gateway for EXIM cargo flows moving between Chile, Peru, and Bolivia.

The new Konecranes Gottwald ESP.10 cranes will significantly increase the terminal’s ability to efficiently load and discharge larger vessels. The equipment upgrades include:

  • Extended Outreach: Each unit offers a 64 meter outreach, enabling operations on massive container ships up to 22 rows wide.
  • Heavy Lifting: The cranes provide a maximum lifting capacity of 125 tonnes, fully supporting heavy and bulk cargo operations.
  • Operational Flexibility: Operators can quickly switch lifting attachments, alternating between standard spreaders and bulk handling grabs.
  • Redundancy: Each crane features dual diesel generator sets, ensuring flexible and uninterrupted terminal operations.

Camilo Jobet, CEO of Terminal Puerto Arica, noted that the company is highly focused on accommodating larger vessels while maintaining operational flexibility across various cargo types. The addition of these cranes, equipped with long tower extensions specifically to handle larger ships, marks the next logical step in TPA’s broader expansion strategy to meet growing regional demand.
