Norwegian shipbuilder Vard has secured a contract with Wind Energy Construction AS to design and construct a state-of-the-art Energy Construction Vessel (ECV). This deal includes an option for a potential additional vessel later this year.
Continuing Collaboration
This contract marks the sixth vessel collaboration between Vard and Wind Energy Construction AS since October 2021. The previous five vessels were Construction Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs). The new ECV represents a significant advancement, specifically tailored for the offshore wind and subsea markets.
Innovative Design Features
The ECV will utilize the VARD 3 11 design, which is designed for optimal station-keeping, manoeuvrability, and sea-keeping. Notably, this vessel will feature several innovative elements:
- Permanently Installed Motion-Compensated Gangway: Includes integrated 3D compensated crane functionality.
- 150-Ton Movement-Compensated Offshore Crane: Enhances capabilities for the renewables sector.
These features are set to advance the capabilities for inspection, maintenance, and repair of pipes, as well as the construction and installation of infrastructure both above and below sea level.
Statements from the Partners
Svein Leon Aure, CEO of Norwind Offshore, expressed enthusiasm about the new vessel. “We are pleased to have, together with Vard, developed a new vessel category which will enable the development of renewable energy to an even greater extent,” Aure said. “The concept builds on vessels within the construction market which we have previously built with Vard, and we feel confident that this will play an important role in the development of offshore wind in the coming years.”
Construction and Delivery
The vessel will be built, outfitted, commissioned, and delivered from Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam, with a scheduled delivery in Q2 2027.
