Maersk has temporarily changed its empty container return procedures for several Gulf countries. Driven by the rapidly evolving security situation and uncertain operational conditions around the Strait of Hormuz, the carrier implemented this measure to protect its vessels, crews, and customers’ cargo.

Until further notice, Maersk will not accept empty containers from import shipments at their standard local return locations. This temporary suspension applies to imports moving into:

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)
  • Qatar
  • Bahrain
  • Kuwait
  • Iraq
  • Saudi Arabia (specifically Dammam and Jubail)
  • Oman (specifically Duqm)

To keep equipment moving safely, customers are now instructed to return their empty containers exclusively to approved regional hubs. Maersk has designated the following locations for all empty returns:

  • Oman: Salalah and Sohar
  • Saudi Arabia: Jeddah

Maersk stated that this operational adjustment will remain in place while it monitors military and maritime developments in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to ensure safe operations and minimize cascading supply chain disruptions across the Gulf.
