German shipbuilder MEYER WERFT has introduced “Vision,” a concept design for what it claims will be the world’s first 100% battery electric cruise ship.

Debuting at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, the vessel aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95%, utilizing existing technology to make sustainable cruise shipping a near term reality.
MEYER WERFT representatives emphasized that the technology required for the Vision concept is already available, offering a practical and commercially competitive option for operators looking to cut CO₂ emissions immediately.
-
Size and Capacity: The ship is planned at approximately 82,000 gross tonnage (GT) with a capacity for 1,856 passengers.
-
Power Source: Corvus Energy will supply the battery system. The company has a proven track record of delivering systems for hybrid and fully electric maritime vessels globally.
-
Timeline: MEYER WERFT stated that if an order is placed this year, the first Vision vessel could be delivered by 2031.
The all electric vessel is primarily designed for European routes. Powered entirely by batteries, it can handle regional voyages such as the route from Barcelona, Spain, to Civitavecchia, Italy.
Transitioning to battery electric power fundamentally changes the ship’s architecture.

This structural shift offers several operational and passenger benefits:
-
Expanded Space: Removing the vertical exhaust shaft frees up significant space on the upper decks, allowing for wide, open views.
-
All Weather Layout: The Vision is designed with enclosed areas for year round operation, including an indoor aqua park positioned at the rear of the ship.
-
Enhanced Comfort: Without the noise and vibration of traditional combustion engines, the vessel will provide a significantly quieter and smoother experience for passengers.
