Peel Ports Group has secured a spot on the shortlist for the prestigious TT Club Innovation in Safety Award. The recognition follows the successful rollout of a fully digital, in house designed system to manage high risk activities, replacing a legacy paper based permit to work process.

The group identified a critical need to modernize its authorization to work procedures. Historically, these relied on inconsistent paper documentation without central oversight.
To address this, a cross functional team spanning engineering, operations, EHS, marine, and safety collaborated to design a streamlined solution.

Instead of buying an off-the-shelf product, Peel Ports built a bespoke system using the SafetyCulture audit platform.

  • Covers hot work, confined spaces, electrical isolation, work at height, and marine consents.
  • Available via mobile, tablet, and desktop.
  • Integrated with Power BI to visualize open/closed permits and conflicting high-risk activities.

The Biomass Facility was selected as the pilot site due to its complex contractor activity and layered permit requirements. After three months of testing and refinement, the system launched group-wide in early 2024.

Since its launch, the system has processed over 19,000 work management packages. Contractors can now access permits digitally at the point of work, upload photographic evidence, and confirm safety compliance in real-time. The platform has significantly improved the consistency, transparency, and control of high-risk operations across the group.
