CMA CGM Group has announced a major partnership with Marlink and Eutelsat to overhaul the internet connectivity across its global fleet. Under the new multi-year agreement, the shipping giant will deploy OneWeb LEO (Low Earth Orbit) services on more than 300 vessels.

The installation is scheduled for the next nine months. Marlink will handle the integration using its “XChange NextGen” platform, creating a hybrid network that blends the new LEO speeds with existing satellite backups to ensure the signal never drops.

Unlike traditional satellites that sit high in orbit (GEO), LEO satellites are closer to Earth. This means lower latency and higher speeds comparable to what you get in an office on shore.

  • The high-speed connection allows for real-time data exchange. This is critical for decarbonization, as it enables the ship to optimize routes and fuel consumption on the fly to reduce emissions.
  • Reliable, fast internet is a massive boost for crew welfare, allowing for better video calls home and access to online services.

CMA CGM has been a shareholder in Eutelsat since 2022, so this partnership reflects a deeper commitment to European digital sovereignty. By combining Marlink’s edge computing with Eutelsat’s satellite network.
CMA CGM is effectively future-proofing its ships for the next generation of digital maritime tools.
