Hambantota International Port (HIP) is rapidly expanding its cargo capacity as global shipping volumes surge in response to ongoing disruptions in the Middle East. With ocean carriers actively diverting vessels away from affected trade lanes.

To manage the influx of rerouted freight, HIP has officially doubled its Roll on/Roll off (RoRo) yard capacity and increased its container yard capacity by 30 percent.
Vehicle transshipment and standard container volumes have now reached record levels, pushing yard utilisation to its highest point in the port’s history.
The port is uniquely positioned to absorb these diverted cargo flows. Located just 10 nautical miles from the primary East West shipping route, HIP allows commercial vessels to divert for transshipment with minimal disruption to their overall transit times.
By quickly expanding its yard space to handle higher volumes without sacrificing operational efficiency. As geopolitical tensions continue to reshape global EXIM routes, the port is expected to capture an even larger share of regional cargo flows moving forward.
