The Indian Navy officially commissioned its latest stealth frigate, the INS Taragiri, in Visakhapatnam.

The vessel is the fourth platform in the Project 17A class and will join the Eastern Fleet to patrol India’s eastern seaboard.

For the export and import sector, the induction of the INS Taragiri adds a critical layer of maritime security.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh noted the vessel is capable of high speed transit, extended deployments, and anti piracy operations. These capabilities ensure safer regional shipping lanes, reliable coastal surveillance, and rapid responses to maritime threats.

Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders with support from over 200 MSMEs, the 6,670 tonne frigate features over 75 percent indigenous content.

The construction utilised approximately 4,000 tonnes of special grade steel supplied by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The wider Project 17A program includes seven guided missile frigates being built at an estimated total cost of Rs 500 billion.

The INS Taragiri is designed with advanced stealth technology to reduce its radar signature. To address a range of combat and defense scenarios, the frigate is equipped with BrahMos supersonic surface to surface missiles, medium range surface to air missiles, and an indigenous anti submarine suite.
