The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Grand Port Maritime de Marseille Fos (GPMM), marking a significant step in India–Europe maritime cooperation.

The agreement aims to facilitate smoother cargo flows and enhance bilateral trade connectivity between the two regions.

A core component of the partnership is technical exchange and capacity building. The ports will collaborate on:

  • Port Digitalization: Implementing smart port platforms and improving data interoperability.
  • Operational Excellence: Sharing best practices to build technologically advanced port ecosystems.

The MoU places a strong emphasis on energy transition and decarbonization. Both JNPA and Marseille Fos have committed to developing green infrastructure, including:

  • Alternative Fuels: Adopting LNG and hydrogen solutions.
  • Onshore Power Supply (OPS): Implementing systems to reduce vessel emissions while at berth.
  • Low-Carbon Bunkering: Building infrastructure to support sustainable shipping.

As India’s largest container port, JNPA will leverage this partnership to expand its reach into European markets. Conversely, Marseille Fosa leading French port and strategic Mediterranean hub will serve as a critical gateway for Indian cargo entering Europe.

The collaboration is expected to drive increased container volumes and promote multimodal connectivity for businesses on both sides.
