Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co, Ltd., part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has officially shipped its first ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS) and ammonia gas abatement system (AGAS).

The units were delivered to Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) to support the development of next generation commercial marine propulsion.

These systems are specifically designed to integrate with J-ENG’s 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR model—the manufacturer’s first ammonia-fueled marine engine.

  • Ammonia Fuel Supply System (AFSS): Engineered to deliver a stable and safe flow of ammonia fuel directly to the marine engine.
  • Ammonia Gas Abatement System (AGAS): Designed to safely process and treat any surplus ammonia that is generated when a vessel switches from ammonia back to conventional fuel oil.

To maximize operational efficiency and safety for the crew, both systems are wired into an integrated control platform that supports fully automatic control and remote operation.

By introducing these systems to the market early, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and J-ENG can conduct rigorous onboard verification of the 7UEC50LSJA-HPSCR engine in tandem with the new fuel handling hardware. This testing phase is a critical milestone that will help accelerate practical decarbonization efforts and the rollout of alternative fuels across the global maritime supply chain.
