Hitachi Rail has agreed to acquire US based Clever Devices, a move designed to significantly expand its footprint as a global digital mobility provider.

This acquisition strengthens Hitachi Rail’s market presence in North America and extends its technology reach beyond standard rail into broader public transit systems.

Headquartered in Woodbury, Clever Devices provides Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) utilized by transit authorities globally. The company currently serves eight of the ten largest transit agencies in North America and expects to generate over $220 million in revenue in 2026. Their core solutions improve fleet management, passenger information systems, and overall operational efficiency across both bus and rail networks.

Following the acquisition, Clever Devices’ technology will directly integrate with Hitachi Rail’s HMAX Mobility platform. This platform relies on data, artificial intelligence, and digital twins to optimise transportation infrastructure. By combining these technologies, the companies aim to deliver real time, multimodal transport solutions for connected urban logistics.

Giuseppe Marino noted that bringing Clever Devices on board will accelerate digital transformation in public transport while expanding Hitachi Rail’s global capabilities. Ultimately, the integration aims to optimize fleet operations, improve energy efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across regional transport networks. The transaction is expected to officially close later in 2026, pending standard regulatory approvals.
