China Begins Sea Trials for World’s Largest Electric Containership (740 TEU)

China’s first 10,000-ton electric containership has officially begun its sea trials. Named the Ning Yuan Dian Kun, the vessel is being hailed as the largest of its kind and a serious breakthrough for short-sea shipping efficiency.

Launched in September 2025 by Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding, the ship left the yard on February 1. It is currently undergoing rigorous trials off the coast of Shanghai (February 6–13) to test its propulsion, battery systems, and autonomous navigation capabilities.

he most interesting feature for port operators is the power system. The ship uses 10 containerized batteries capable of generating 19,000 KWh to drive two 875 KW motors.

Solar Assist: It also features photovoltaic cells on deck for auxiliary power.
Flexible Charging: it can swap its battery containers for fully charged ones, drastically cutting turnaround time.

Vessel Specs:
Max Speed: 11.5 knots,
Capacity: 740 TEU,
Length: 128 meters (420 feet)

Once delivered, the vessel will join Ningbo Ocean Shipping’s fleet. It is the first of at least two battery-powered ships designed specifically to run green feeder services into the busy Ningbo-Zhoushan port complex.
